What This Agent Does

The Identify Product Capabilities Agent helps Product Managers translate customer and user knowledge into a structured set of Product Capabilities.

It marks the transition from the user perspective to the product perspective.

Starting from Jobs-to-be-Done, user activities and the desired User Experience, the Agent identifies:

What must the product be able to do to enable this experience and help the user accomplish the Job-to-be-Done?

The Agent identifies and structures these abilities before the team moves to detailed Product Requirements.

This helps avoid jumping too early to specific features, technologies or solutions.

What You Can Provide

You can provide the Agent with:

  • one or more Jobs-to-be-Done
  • the related User Activities
  • the current or desired User Experience
  • Customer Insights
  • customer needs and pain points
  • User Journey information
  • existing Product Capabilities
  • existing Product Requirements
  • competitor information
  • product strategy or positioning
  • technical or business constraints
  • documentation describing the current product

The Agent can work with both structured and unstructured material.

How the Agent Works

The Agent analyses the selected JTBD and the related User Experience and identifies the abilities the product needs in order to support them.

For each relevant activity or desired experience, it:

  • identifies candidate Product Capabilities
  • expresses them from the product perspective
  • keeps them independent from specific solutions whenever possible
  • separates capabilities from features, components and detailed requirements
  • splits overly broad capabilities into clearer individual abilities
  • identifies supporting or enabling capabilities
  • detects duplicated or overlapping capabilities
  • identifies capabilities shared across different JTBD or user activities
  • highlights possible capability gaps
  • maintains traceability to the customer or user knowledge that generated each capability

Whenever appropriate, the Agent uses concise, action-oriented formulations such as:

  • Detect an incorrect operating condition.
  • Guide the user through configuration.
  • Verify that the product is ready for operation.
  • Adapt operation to the detected context.

The Agent can also help classify capabilities as:

  • Essential
  • Experience Enhancing
  • Differentiating
  • Enabling

The resulting structure creates the bridge:

JTBD → User Activity → Desired User Experience → Product Capability → Product Requirement

Human Validation

Product Capabilities proposed by the Agent should always be reviewed by a Product Manager or other relevant expert before being used as the basis for product definition.

Human validation should verify that each capability:

  • is genuinely required by the relevant JTBD or User Experience
  • describes an ability of the product rather than a specific solution
  • is neither too broad nor unnecessarily detailed
  • is not duplicated by another capability
  • remains consistent with product strategy and positioning
  • is technically and economically plausible
  • has a clear reason for existing
  • provides a useful basis for defining Product Requirements

Particular attention should be given to capabilities generated from assumptions or incomplete customer evidence.

The Agent structures and challenges the transition from user needs to product abilities. Humans validate what the product should actually be capable of doing.
